check out Battles (the band)

One of my favorite recent albums is very hard to explain in any recommendation. Battles, a nerd-rock or math-rock supergroup is unlike anything else you have heard (unless you really dig math rock). I think Mirrors was released last week, but I have been listening a few weeks (came out in Europe before that) and feel ready to recommend them.

I can only describe it as avant garde jazz mixed with Kid A era Radiohead by an IT department that really like childish vocal stylings. In fact, my 4 year old son likes their lead single, Atlas, as much as I do (but for profoundly different reasons).

Surprisingly, the arbiters of cool at Pitchfork and I agree for once. Read their review (but leave the site immediately, unless you are able to think for yourself and ignore their wrongheadedness on most albums).

Watch the wonderful Atlas video here.

I've been looking for this album for a couple of weeks and can't find it. Guess I'll have to order it online. Love Atlas. You can also get the track free on the KEXP Song of the Day podcast.

this is really cool. i haven't had a chance to check it out until watching it here. very unique.

some of the vocals remind of the Swedish electroclash band The Knife that i told you about (remember...the one where you said, "maybe i don't like this because i've already listened to it....in the 80's"). if you get a chance, check out Silent Shout (2006), by The Knife. maybe you won't like it, but given how you're into Battles, i could definitely see you digging it...
