It is my opinion that you cannot be a Rock Snob without simultaneously being a Music Geek. It is an impossibility. If, like myself, you qualify as a music geek or rock snob, you must see this website. Imagine Bill James as a music fan instead of a baseball fan.
Henrik Franzon, a Swedish music fan with too much time on his hands gives us Acclaimed Music, a site you must spend a few minutes perusing. It is fabulously geeky and comprehensive in its analysis of the best reviewed albums and songs of all times (you can even download spreadsheets- oooh).
By the way, according to his calculation, Pet Sounds is the greatest album of all time- a fact I have know for a number of years.
Here is his mathematical analysis of the greatest albums of all time* (his spreadsheet has 3000 of them).
1. Beach Boys- Pet Sounds
2. Beatles- Revolver
3. Nivana- Nevermind
4. The Velvet Underground and Nico- self titled
5. Beatles- Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
6. Rolling Stone- Exile on Main Street
7. Bob Dylan- Blond on Blond
8. Marvin Gaye- What's Going On
9. Sex Pistols- Never mind the bullocks, Here's the Sex Pistols
10. The Clash- London Calling
(my Top 10 has 5 of these albums... 1. Pet Sounds/ 2. What's Going On/ 5. Revolver/ 7. Sgt. Pepper/ 10. London Calling)
He also gives us the Top 3000 songs of all time, as well as yearly analysis. Like a donut to the mouth of Homer is this site to me.
*as expected, everything is skewed to the 60s and 70s.
btw- the rest of my Top 10 (as of today) is 3. Abbey Road/ 4. The Joshua Tree/ 6. OK Computer / 8. Miseducation of Lauren Hill/ 9. Automatic for the People (these are Rock Albums, saving myself the trouble of fitting in Miles Davis and John Coltrane)

i just discovered Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" a few months back...it's amazing. so much emotion constrained in such a tight space. 1967 was an amazing year (summer of love), as well as sgt. pepper's being released that year. it was also forty years ago from 2007. wish this year had as much great music coming out...
